About Us

Sharjah Cat & Dog Shelter project was made possible thanks to the generosity, forward thinking and love for animals and their environment by His Royal Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohamed Al-Qassimi, member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Sharjah, with the assistance of Sharjah Municipality under His Highness’s direction.

The aim of the shelter is to create a welcoming home-away-from-home for homeless cats and dogs within the Sharjah community. The cat shelter is a state-of-the-art, cage-less building comprising of eight suites allowing us to house up to six cats or kittens in each room. We are currently constructing a similar concept for Sharjah’s homeless dogs on the same property.

Description

The shelter was designed to meet the needs of its homeless feline guests (and canine guests in the future), while welcoming and encouraging involvement from the local community as well as educating children on the importance of animal welfare. We will also be running an animal assisted therapy program from our purpose built education centre for both main stream children, special needs children and young adults. At present we are also currently constructing an off leash dog park with designated agility area for the general public and their companion canine pets.

Sharjah Cat & Dog Shelter consulted with leading sheltering and behavior experts from the RSPCA (Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) located in the UK who have been in operation since 1824. The RSPCA assisted us by ensuring that the design, operations, and practices of the new shelter offer the best temporary care and comfort for our homeless guests, thus easing their transition into permanent loving homes when adopted. The shelter was designed to enhance the physical and emotional health of its homeless cats, kittens (and soon dogs), therefore increasing their chances of adoptability. We have achieved this by building suites instead of cages. This ensures a quiet, relaxed and social environment. We have a treatment clinic on site to tend to any medical problems should the need arise. The clinic has its own dedicated full time vet for our homeless guests and treatment of feral cats in our trap, spay/ neuter release program.

We are located in the heart of new Sharjah, near the airport in the Ruhmania district.
