About Us

Dating back to 1898, it is considered as one of the most thrilling heritage places in the city. It is located next to Al Jahili Park downtown and was established by Sheikh Zayed Bin Khalifa (zayed I), the ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1855 to 1909, near a settlement around Al Jahili Oasis. He used to live there in summer and plan for many development projects, starting from aflaj to defense buildings.

Some engravings on the southern gate of the fort show that the internal square fort dates back to the 1890s. It has been the summer resort of the ruling family and a symbol of political stability achieved during the time of Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa.

Description

The internal square fort and the separate circular tower are the oldest parts of this historic landmark. The tower was probably built for protecting the oasis against invaders. By 1955, the fort was in a bad need for restoration and renovation after it had been used by the military as a barrack, storehouse, and military basis. During the 1980s, the fort was used for another purpose, as many events were held in its wide courtyard, and the present-day entrance surrounded by large towers was added to the building.
